- The facility will be closed on Wednesday, January 21 and will resume normal business hours on Thursday, January 22 from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- The facility will be closed on Wednesday, February 18th and will resume normal business hours on Thursday, February 19th from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- The facility will be closed on Wednesday, May 27th and will resume normal business on Thursday, May 28th from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- The facility will be closed on Friday, June 19th and will resume normal business on Saturday, June 20th from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- The facility will be closed on Saturday, July 4th and will resume normal business on Wednesday, July 8th from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- The facility will be closed on Wednesday, September 9th and will resume normal business on Thursday, September 10th from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- The facility will be closed on Wednesday, November 11th and will resume normal business on Thursday, November 12th from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- The facility will be closed on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, November 26th - 28th. It will be open Tuesday November 24th and Wednesday November 25th from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- The facility will be closed on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, December 24th - 26th. It will be open Tuesday December 22nd and Wednesday December 23rd from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
The Moderate Risk Waste Facility (MRWF) provides areas for material unloading, collecting/processing, and material storage of Moderate Risk Waste (MRW) and Household Hazardous Waste (HHW). The County’s MRWF is located at 1709 s Ely Street in Kennewick, WA. The operating hours for public customer disposal are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Wednesday through Saturday. Public drop-off of MRW may be suspended during times of normal operation for the preparation and loading of MRW for transportation. Days and hours of operation are determined by the County and may be revised as needed at the discretion of the Public Works Manager.
Proper signage and striping are used to direct traffic flow, efficient unloading of vehicles and for site safety and include the following:
- Pavement directional arrows for proper traffic flow.
- Stop sign at the site exit and at drop-off lanes within the facility grounds.
- Materials accepted signs for customer and staff reference near the MRW unloading areas.
What is Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)?
HHW refers to leftover household products that can be dangerous or hazardous due to their chemical properties. These materials, when discarded improperly, can pose risks to human health and the environment. These materials are typically toxic, corrosive, ignitable or reactive.
Why is proper HHW disposal important?
Improper disposal of HHW can have serious consequences for the environment and human health. When HHW is thrown in the trash of poured down the drain, it can: Contaminate soil and groundwater, pollute waterways through stormwater runoff, and pose risks to waste handlers and the general public.
Examples of HHW that are accepted at the Benton County MRWF include:
- Paints, varnishes, and stains.
- Pesticides and herbicides.
- Cleaners and solvents.
- Mercury
- Automotive products like used oil, antifreeze, and brake fluid.
- Oxidizers
- Acids
Examples of HHW that are NOT accepted at the Benton County MRWF include:
- Appliances
- Ammunition, fireworks, and all explosive devices
- Alkaline, Lithium Ion or Lithium metal batteries-including E-Cigs, vape pens etc.
- Asbestos
- Agricultural and Commercial grade chemicals
- Needles, Syringes
- Radioactive materials
- Medicines
- Compressed Cylinders
