Every ten years, government jurisdictions of all kinds across the country undertake “redistricting” – a process of adjusting electoral district boundaries in an effort to rebalance populations between and among distance. This happens every each federal decennial census.
In Washington, redistricting for counties is governed by RCW 29.70.100.
Benton County assembled an all-volunteer committee to work with staff to develop alternatives for redrawn boundaries. Three alternative maps were created, with Alternative 1 being the “preferred” alternative of the committee. These maps are being presented to the County Commissioners for selection and adoption. The selected map shall become the “Redistricting Plan”.
Each of the maps can be viewed by clicking the button at the bottom of the page. Maps included are:
- Current Boundaries (2012-2021)
- Alternative 1 (preferred)
- Alternative 2
- Alternative 3
A 16-page report has been prepared, located in a button linked at the bottom of the page, explaining the redistricting process and considerations in greater detail. A public hearing on the adoption of a 2022-2031 Redistricting Plan will occur at 9:00am, Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at the County Courthouse in Prosser.
