When should I obtain my marriage license?

A license issued today would be valid for use between:

April 2, 2026 and May 31, 2026

Don't wait until the last minute! Enter the date of your ceremony to see when you should obtain your marriage license:

Witnesses

  • Witnesses are not needed to apply, but two witnesses are required to be present at the ceremony.

Washington law does not specify a minimum age for witnesses. However, they must be considered competent to observe and sign legal documents, so we strongly recommend that witnesses be at least 18 years old.

Who Can Officiate?

Washington law allows the following individuals to perform marriages:

  • Judges and court commissioners (active or retired)
  • Licensed or ordained religious officials (ministers, priests, rabbis, imams, etc.)
  • See RCW 26.04.050 for the full legal list

A qualifying officiant from any state may perform the ceremony, but it must take place within Washington State.

Washington State does not “license” officiants. Individuals ordained through online ministries are commonly used, but the Auditor’s Office cannot verify or endorse specific organizations.

Neither applicant may perform the ceremony.

Finding an Officiant

The Auditor’s Office does not perform civil ceremonies, but there are many options:

  • Search online for "wedding officiants Tri-Cities WA"
  • Check wedding listings in the Tri-City Herald
  • Contact Benton County District Court at (509) 735-8476 to schedule a judge

Public Record

Marriage licenses are part of the public record, except for individuals enrolled in the Washington State Address Confidentiality Program.  Once recorded, a marriage license cannot be "unrecorded."
